MARY ELIZABETH GOVANS BATES was born on March 2, 1923 to the late Clinton and Clara Govans in Jarrettsville, Maryland. She departed this life on Monday, June 14, 2010 at Bel Air Health and Rehabilitation, Bel Air, Maryland.

Mary received her education at Federal Hill elementary School in Rock, Maryland. She was united in holy matrimony to Dabney Bates.

Mary was employed by Govans Manor and became a domestic worker later in years. Mary was a very fun loving person, daughter and sister. She always enjoyed singing gospel music. She was a member of the Mt. Calvary U.A.M.E. Church, Aberdeen, Maryland.

Mary leaves to cherish her memory; brothers, Charles, Sr., Jehu Sr., and wife Berniece; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

She was preceded in death her husband, Dabney Bates; sisters, Viola and Susie; and brothers, James, Elmer, Clarence and Josh, Sr.

A memorial service will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday July 3, 2010 at Mt. Calvary U.A.M.E. Church, 123 Mt. Calvary Church Road, Aberdeen, MD. Burial will be private.
