William F. McInerney, Sr.

"Mac"

Age 63, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on Monday, March 8, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Wilmington, Mac was the son of Francis McInerney and Ethel (Shields) McInerney Starr. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his stepfather, Anthony Starr. He graduated from Dickinson High School in 1965. He served his country proudly as a US Marine Corporal during the Vietnam War in the First Marine Division 1/9, and was honorably discharged following the War. He worked as a signalman for CSX for 22 years until he retired in 1996.

As a child, Mac was a huge sports fan, and his love for sports continued through his adult years with his favorite teams being the Phillies and Eagles. Mac was also an outstanding baseball player. He played for the Brandywine Semi-Pro League and was recognized as an all-star catcher. In addition, Mac was also an exceptional 3rd baseman for numerous softball teams. Mac greatly enjoyed spending his free time at the St. Anthony's Club in Wilmington with good friends, and at Delaware Park - his favorite place to be. He loved the horses, and was always content there, whether it be during the races, or during one of his many jackpot experiences on the slots. He was happiest when he was in the company of family, especially the quality time he was able to spend with his children and grandchildren.

Mac will be remembered most of all for his loud, "burly" voice and stubborn, yet big-hearted personality. He was one of a kind, and was loved by so many throughout his well-lived life. You can review his journey by visiting his website: www.caringbridge.org/visit/mac31

He is survived by his wife Gail (Morris) McInerney; his children, Stephen Alexander, Matthew Alexander and his wife, Angie, William F. McInerney, Jr., and Shannon McInerney; three grandchildren, Stephen, Jr., Erika, and Matthew, Jr. Also surviving are his three sisters and their husbands, Maureen and Robert Starr, Sheila and John Hobson, and Jeanie and Ken Janney; two brothers, Paul McInerney and his wife, Maureen, and Kevin McInerney; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Friends and family are invited to visitation on Sunday, March 14th between 5 and 8 PM at Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown Roads, Wilmington. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday morning at 11 AM at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Road, Wilmington.
